Are Cockroaches found everywhere in Australia? Are they a problem in Tasmania?

Not that long ago we would have suggested that Cockroaches are 'rarely' found in Tasmania. I think we could all say we have seen one here or there but they have never been in large numbers and never really felt like a threat. The cold hard facts are that Cockroaches are becoming more and more prevalent here in Tasmania. 

 

We can only assume that the Cockroaches' ability to adapt, combined with what seems like an increase in temperature and humidity in Tasmania, are contributing factors. Trends suggest that Cockroaches may become the new norm for Tasmanians. Its important that we are all aware and prepared!

 

Cockroaches are found throughout Australia in hotter humid climates. There are over 4000 species of cockroaches across the globe. In Australia we have approx. 450 species however there are only a few that are real pests. These are

 

• German Cockroach

• Australian Cockroach

• American Cockroach

What can you do to minimise your risk of a Cockroach infestation?

• Seal cracks, crevices or gaps in sliding doors, window screens and around pipes where cockroaches may enter

• Repair any leaking taps as cockroaches need water to survive

• Wash your dishes and pack food away after meals

• Clean up crumbs and spills immediately

• Keep food containers sealed and don’t leave dirty dishes out overnight

• Don’t leave fruit on the counter top

• Empty garbage bins and vacuum and mop frequently

• Keep the house clean

What to do if you suspect you have a Cockroach infestation, or the beginnings of one?

Cockroaches carry bacteria that, if deposited on food, can cause salmonella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus. They also play a role in causing asthma in Humans. If you suspect you have a Cockroach issue in your home or business please follow the above preventative advice first.
